How To Use Youper
Getting Started (3 minutes)
- Download Youper from the App Store or Google Play.
- Open the app and answer a few questions about how you're feeling and what you want help with (anxiety, stress, sleep, motivation, etc.).
- Do your first mood check-in. Youper asks you to pick an emotion from a list, then asks follow-up questions about what triggered it.
- Start a conversation. Type how you're feeling or what's on your mind. Youper responds with questions and reflections based on CBT (cognitive behavioral therapy) techniques.
- Check your mood timeline. After a few days, the Insights tab shows patterns - what times of day you feel best, what situations stress you out, and how your mood changes over time.
How It Works
Youper is an AI therapist (not a replacement for a human one, but a daily mental health coach). Each conversation is 5-10 minutes. You might:
- Identify thinking patterns. If you say "I'm worried about work," Youper asks what specifically worries you, whether that's happened before, and how you handled it. This helps you see recurring anxieties.
- Practice coping techniques. Youper suggests breathing exercises, reframing negative thoughts, or gratitude prompts based on what you're dealing with.
- Set mental health goals. Want to feel less anxious by Friday? Youper breaks that into small daily actions (like one 5-minute check-in or trying a new grounding exercise).
Pro Tips
- Check in at the same time daily. Morning or evening works best. Youper's insights get more accurate when you have consistent data, not random one-off chats.
- Be specific in your answers. Instead of "I'm stressed," say "I'm stressed because my manager gave me 3 new projects with the same deadline." Youper's responses are better when it has context.
- Review your Insights weekly. The Mood Timeline shows patterns you won't notice day-to-day. Maybe you're always anxious on Sundays (anticipating Monday), or your mood tanks after scrolling Instagram. Knowing the trigger is half the battle.
- Use the "Quick Check-In" when you're overwhelmed. If you don't have time for a full conversation, tap the emoji that fits your mood. Youper logs it and asks one quick question. Takes 30 seconds.
What It's NOT Good For
- Crisis situations. If you're having thoughts of self-harm or suicide, call 988 (Suicide & Crisis Lifeline) or go to an ER. Youper is for everyday mental health, not emergencies.
- Replacing therapy for serious mental health conditions. Youper works for mild anxiety, stress, or low moods. If you have diagnosed depression, PTSD, bipolar disorder, or other clinical issues, you need a licensed therapist - not an app.
