How To Use Woebot
Getting Started (3 minutes)
- Download Woebot from the App Store or Google Play.
- Open the app and chat with Woebot for the first time. It asks about your mood, what's going on in your life, and what you want help with (stress, anxiety, sleep, relationships, etc.).
- Pick a check-in schedule. Woebot can ping you once or twice a day to ask how you're feeling, or you can open the app whenever you need it.
- Start a conversation. Type like you're texting a friend. Woebot responds with questions, reflections, and exercises based on cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) techniques.
How It Works
Woebot isn't trying to replace a therapist. It's more like a daily mental health coach that helps you notice patterns in your thinking and suggests small shifts. Each chat is 5-10 minutes. You might:
- Track your mood over time. Woebot asks how you're feeling and why. After a week, it shows you what triggers stress or low moods.
- Challenge negative thoughts. If you say "I always mess things up," Woebot walks you through reframing that thought with CBT exercises.
- Practice coping skills. Woebot teaches breathing techniques, gratitude prompts, or grounding exercises you can use in the moment.
Pro Tips
- Be honest. Woebot's responses get better when you give real answers. It's AI, not a person - nothing you say leaves the app or gets judged.
- Use it regularly for 2 weeks. You won't see patterns or progress from one chat. Woebot gets more useful when it has enough data to spot trends in your mood and habits.
- Try the exercises even if they sound silly. The gratitude journal or thought-challenging prompts feel awkward at first, but they're clinically proven techniques. Give them a shot.
What It's NOT Good For
- Crisis situations. If you're in immediate danger or having thoughts of self-harm, call 988 (Suicide & Crisis Lifeline) or go to an ER. Woebot is for everyday mental health support, not emergencies.
- Replacing therapy for serious conditions. Woebot helps with stress, mild anxiety, and low moods. If you have diagnosed depression, PTSD, or other clinical conditions, you need a human therapist - not a chatbot.
