Go to whimsical.com and click Sign up in the top right. You can use Google or email. No credit card needed for the free plan.
After signing in, click New Board. This is your blank canvas for brainstorming, planning, or mapping out ideas.
Press / on your keyboard to see the menu. Pick what you want to add - sticky notes, shapes, arrows, text boxes, wireframe components, or flowchart blocks.
Drag things around. Resize them. Connect shapes with lines by clicking and dragging from one edge to another. Everything snaps into place automatically.
Invite your team by clicking Share in the top right. Send the link and everyone can edit at the same time.
Pro Tips
Start with a template. Click Templates in the left sidebar. Whimsical has pre-built layouts for user flows, brainstorming sessions, project roadmaps, and wireframes. Pick one, duplicate it, and customize.
Use keyboard shortcuts obsessively. Press / to add elements. Press L to create a line between two shapes. Press T for text. Once you memorize a few shortcuts, you'll never touch the toolbar again.
Switch between Boards, Diagrams, and Wireframes based on the task. Boards are freeform whiteboards. Diagrams are structured flowcharts. Wireframes are for mocking up app screens. They all live in the same workspace, so you can link between them.
Embed docs and images. Drop in YouTube videos, Loom recordings, or screenshots to add context right next to your ideas. Your board becomes a single source of truth instead of scattered across 10 tabs.
What It's NOT Good For
Finished design work. Whimsical is for exploring ideas fast, not creating pixel-perfect mockups. Once you've nailed the concept, move to Figma for final designs.
Complex project management. Whimsical has sticky notes and checklists, but no Gantt charts, dependencies, or task assignments. For tracking actual work, stick with Notion or Asana.
