Download Sleep Cycle from the App Store or Google Play. Free version gives you basic tracking. Premium unlocks trends and detailed analysis.
Place your phone on your nightstand - not under your pillow. Sleep Cycle uses your phone's microphone and motion sensors to track movement and breathing patterns while you sleep.
Open the app before bed, set your wake-up window (like "wake me between 7:00 and 7:30 AM"), and hit Start. The alarm will go off during light sleep within that range, so you wake up less groggy.
Sleep through the night. The app monitors your sleep stages without you doing anything.
Check your score in the morning. Sleep Cycle shows how long you slept, how much time you spent in deep sleep vs. light sleep, and gives you a quality score.
Reading Your Sleep Data
Sleep Score: A number between 0-100 based on how much rest you got and how consistent your sleep stages were. Higher is better, but don't obsess over hitting 100 every night.
Sleep Stages: Sleep Cycle breaks your night into light sleep, deep sleep, and REM. Deep sleep is when your body recovers. REM is when you process memories and emotions. If you're low on either, your sleep quality suffers.
Wake-Up Mood: The app asks how you feel when you wake up. Track this over time and Sleep Cycle will show patterns - like whether going to bed earlier actually makes you feel better.
Pro Tips
Use the smart alarm feature. Instead of waking up at exactly 7:00 AM (which might be mid-deep-sleep), set a 30-minute window. Sleep Cycle picks the lightest sleep phase in that range to wake you, so you feel less like you got hit by a truck.
Log sleep notes. If you had caffeine late, exercised before bed, or dealt with a stressful day, add a note. Over time, you'll see what actually affects your sleep vs. what you thought was the problem.
Check trends weekly, not daily. One bad night doesn't mean much. Look at your average over a week to see if your sleep quality is improving or tanking.
What It's NOT Good For
Medical-grade sleep tracking. Sleep Cycle is accurate enough to spot patterns, but it's not a sleep lab. If you think you have sleep apnea or another condition, see a doctor - don't rely on an app.
Tracking sleep with a partner in the same bed. The app can get confused if someone else is moving around. It works best if you sleep alone or your partner doesn't toss and turn much.
