Once you're in, you'll see a dashboard with tools for video generation, image editing, and AI effects. Start with Gen-4.5 (their text-to-video tool) if you want to see what Runway can do.
Type a description of the video you want - something like "A person walking through a foggy forest at sunrise, cinematic lighting." Hit generate and wait about 30 seconds.
You'll get a short video clip based on your prompt. If it's not quite right, tweak the description and try again. The more specific you are, the better the output.
Download your video or keep editing it inside Runway. You can extend clips, change styles, or add motion effects.
Key Tools to Try
Gen-4.5 (Text to Video): Describe a scene and Runway creates video from scratch. Works for concept art, mockups, or just experimenting with ideas.
Image to Video: Upload a still image and Runway animates it. Great for bringing old photos to life or creating motion from illustrations.
Erase and Replace: Select an object in a video and replace it with something else. Remove a person from a shot, change the background, swap props.
Motion Brush: Paint over part of a video to make just that section move. Useful for adding subtle animation to otherwise static scenes.
Pro Tips
Start with reference images. If you upload an image as a starting point, your video will match that style and composition more closely than text alone.
Use short, clear prompts. "Close-up of rain hitting a window" works better than a paragraph describing every detail. You can always refine after the first attempt.
Generate in batches. Make 3-4 variations of the same prompt with slight changes. Pick the best one instead of hoping the first try nails it.
What It's NOT Good For
Long-form video. Runway creates short clips (a few seconds each). If you need a full 2-minute video, you'll have to stitch together multiple generations.
Perfect realism every time. AI-generated video still has quirks - weird hand movements, physics that don't quite track. It's getting better, but don't expect flawless output on complex scenes.
