How To Use Oura Ring

Getting Started (5 minutes)

  1. Order your ring from ouraring.com. You'll get a sizing kit first to make sure it fits perfectly. Wear the sensor side (the bump) on your palm side for the most accurate readings.
  2. Download the Oura app (iOS or Android) and pair your ring via Bluetooth. The app walks you through the setup in about two minutes.
  3. Wear the ring 24/7, especially while sleeping. Oura tracks over 20 health metrics from your finger, which gives more accurate heart rate and temperature data than your wrist.
  4. Check your Readiness Score each morning. It tells you how recovered your body is based on sleep, activity, and heart rate variability. High score? Go hard. Low score? Take it easy.
  5. Your Sleep Score breaks down how well you slept - time in each sleep stage, restfulness, timing. Use it to spot patterns like how late meals or alcohol affect your deep sleep.

What to Track Daily

Your Oura app gives you three main scores every morning:

  • Readiness - How ready your body is to perform today. It factors in sleep quality, resting heart rate, body temperature, and recent activity. If it's in the red, your body's telling you to recover.
  • Sleep - Total sleep time, sleep stages (deep, REM, light), sleep efficiency, and how often you woke up. You'll see what time you actually fell asleep vs. when you went to bed.
  • Activity - Steps, active calories, workout heart rate, and whether you hit your movement goals. Oura also tracks inactive time to remind you to move throughout the day.

Pro Tips

  • Pay attention to body temperature trends. Oura tracks your baseline and flags when you're running warmer than usual, which can signal you're getting sick, ovulating, or overtraining. Catch it early and adjust.
  • Use Rest Mode on recovery days. If you're sick or intentionally resting, turn on Rest Mode so Oura doesn't ding your scores for low activity. Your Readiness will focus purely on recovery signals.
  • Set your bedtime window in the app. Oura will send you a reminder when it's time to start winding down, based on when you need to wake up and how much sleep your body typically needs.

What It's NOT Good For

  • Real-time workout tracking. Oura doesn't have a screen, so you can't check your heart rate mid-run. It's built for recovery insights, not live performance data. If you want that, keep your Apple Watch or Garmin.
  • Instant feedback. Oura processes your sleep data after you wake up, so you won't see your Sleep Score until the morning. It's not designed for people who need metrics during the night.
