How To Use Khanmigo
Getting Started (2 minutes)
- Go to khanmigo.ai and click Sign up. You'll need to pay for access - Khanmigo is a premium add-on to Khan Academy.
- If you're under 18, have a parent or guardian sign up and add you to their account.
- Once you're in, you'll see the Khanmigo chat interface. It looks like ChatGPT but it's designed specifically for learning.
- Ask a question about any subject - math, science, history, coding, writing. Try "Explain photosynthesis" or "Help me solve this algebra problem."
- Khanmigo won't just give you the answer. It asks questions to guide you to the solution. That's the whole point - you learn by doing, not copying.
- If you're stuck on a Khan Academy exercise, click the Khanmigo icon right in the lesson. It gives hints specific to that problem.
Prompt Templates
Use these when you're studying.
- Homework help (math): "I'm stuck on this problem: [paste problem]. Don't give me the answer - ask me questions to help me figure it out."
- Writing feedback: "I'm writing an essay on [topic]. Here's my intro paragraph: [paste text]. What could make it stronger?"
- Study buddy mode: "Quiz me on [topic] with 5 multiple-choice questions. After each answer, explain why it's right or wrong."
- Explain like I'm 10: "Explain [complex topic] in simple terms with an analogy. Then give me 3 follow-up questions to test if I understand."
Pro Tips
- Let it Socratic-method you. If you ask for an answer, Khanmigo pushes back. It'll say "What do you think the first step is?" Frustrating at first, but you'll actually remember the material.
- Use it for writing practice. Khanmigo can roleplay as a historical figure, a debate opponent, or a writing coach. Ask it to be Abraham Lincoln and interview him about the Emancipation Proclamation.
- Set it to tutor mode for kids. Parents: Khanmigo has safety rails built in. It keeps conversations on-topic and won't let kids use it to cheat or go off-script.
What It's NOT Good For
- Quick answers when you just need to finish homework. If you're racing the clock, Khanmigo will slow you down. That's by design, but sometimes you just need the answer to move on.
- Advanced college-level subjects. It's strongest in K-12 and early college material. For specialized grad-level topics, you'll hit its limits.
