Stop Saying 'Um': How Google's Free AI App Polishes Your Speech in Real-Time
Google just launched an AI dictation app that does something most speech-to-text tools don't. It actually makes you sound better.
Google AI Edge Eloquent transcribes what you say, then automatically cleans it up. No "ums." No "uhs." No awkward mid-sentence corrections. Just polished, professional text that sounds like you meant to say it that way all along.
And it's completely free.
What It Does
Google AI Edge Eloquent is a voice-to-text app that runs entirely on your phone. You speak into it, watch the live transcription appear, and when you stop talking, the app automatically filters out filler words and polishes the text.
Unlike basic dictation that transcribes every stumble verbatim, Eloquent uses Google's Gemma AI models to capture your intended meaning. It understands the difference between what you said and what you meant to say.
The cleaned-up text gets copied to your clipboard automatically. Paste it into email, messages, notes, documents - anywhere text goes.
Who It's For
This is for anyone who:
- Gets nervous writing professional emails or messages
- Talks faster than they type
- Wants to sound more confident in writing
- Uses voice notes but hates how messy they sound transcribed
- Needs to capture thoughts quickly without editing later
If you've ever wished you could just speak your thoughts and have them come out sounding professional, this is built for you.
Pillar alignment: Life. This is a zero-setup mobile tool that makes everyday communication easier. No tech skills required, no account needed (unless you want Gmail integration), works completely offline.
Getting Started
Step 1: Download Google AI Edge Eloquent from the iOS App Store (free).
Step 2: Open the app. It will download the Gemma speech recognition models to your phone. This happens once. After that, everything runs offline if you want.
Step 3: Tap the microphone button and start talking. You'll see live transcription as you speak.
Step 4: When you're done, tap pause or stop. The app automatically cleans up the text and copies it to your clipboard.
Step 5: Paste wherever you need it. That's it.
Optional: Turn on "offline mode" in the top-right corner if you want 100% on-device processing (no internet connection needed). Leave it off if you want Google's cloud Gemini models to handle the text polishing for even better results.
Key Features with Examples
Automatic Filler Word Removal
You say: "Um, I wanted to, uh, follow up on our conversation from, like, yesterday about the project timeline."
Eloquent outputs: "I wanted to follow up on our conversation from yesterday about the project timeline."
No manual editing. It just removes the verbal clutter.
Text Transformation Options
Once you have your transcription, tap one of four buttons:
- Key points: Converts your speech into a bulleted summary
- Formal: Makes the tone more professional
- Short: Condenses the message
- Long: Expands with more detail
Example: You dictate a quick thought about a meeting. Hit "Formal" and it restructures it into a proper email-ready paragraph.
Custom Dictionary
Add names, jargon, or technical terms you use often. The app learns them and transcribes them correctly every time.
You can even import words from your recently sent Gmail messages. If you frequently write about "PolyQuant" or "Kubernetes," the app will recognize those words immediately.
Usage Stats
See how many words you dictated, your words-per-minute speed, and your transcription history. It's surprisingly motivating to watch your speaking efficiency improve.
Offline Mode
Toggle on "fully offline" and nothing leaves your phone. The Gemma models run entirely on-device. No internet required. No data sent to Google's servers.
Toggle it off and you get cloud-based Gemini polishing for higher-quality text cleanup. Your choice.
Pricing Breakdown
Free tier: Everything. No subscriptions. No usage caps. No limits.
That's it. There is no paid tier. Google is releasing this as a free tool.
For context, competitors charge:
- Wispr Flow: $8/month
- Otter.ai: $16.99/month (limited free tier)
- SuperWhisper: One-time $30 purchase
Google AI Edge Eloquent does the same core job for $0.
Limitations and What It's Bad At
iOS only (for now). Android version is referenced in the app description but hasn't launched yet. If you're on Android, you're waiting.
Update: As of April 7, Google removed Android references from the App Store listing but added that an iOS keyboard is coming soon.
Not a keyboard replacement yet. You have to open the app, dictate, then copy and paste. It's not system-wide dictation. Competitors like Wispr Flow offer a floating button that works anywhere on your phone. Google is adding an iOS keyboard feature soon, but it's not live yet.
Polishing can be too aggressive sometimes. The app's AI cleanup occasionally changes your intended tone. If you want casual, conversational language, it might formalize it more than you'd like. You can toggle offline mode to reduce this (local models are more literal), but it's worth checking the output.
No real-time collaboration features. This is a solo tool. You can't share transcripts with others or collaborate on dictated text inside the app. You paste it elsewhere for that.
Limited formatting options. Four transformation buttons (Key points, Formal, Short, Long) are useful but basic. You can't customize the style or create your own presets.
Comparison to Alternatives
vs. Wispr Flow ($8/month)
Wispr Flow has system-wide integration, a floating dictation button, and more polish. But it costs $8/month. Eloquent is free and works offline. If you don't need the floating button, Eloquent wins on price.
vs. SuperWhisper ($30 one-time)
SuperWhisper is Mac-only and focuses on desktop dictation. Eloquent is mobile-first. Different use cases. If you dictate on your phone more than your computer, Eloquent is the better fit.
vs. Otter.ai ($0-$16.99/month)
Otter is built for meeting transcription and collaboration. Eloquent is built for personal dictation. Otter's free tier caps at 300 minutes/month. Eloquent has no caps. For solo dictation, Eloquent is simpler and unlimited.
vs. Built-in iOS dictation
iOS dictation transcribes everything you say, including filler words. It doesn't polish or clean up. Eloquent's AI cleanup is the entire point. Not even close.
Verdict: Who Should Use This
Use Google AI Edge Eloquent if:
- You want free, unlimited voice-to-text with AI cleanup
- You care about privacy and want offline processing
- You speak faster than you type
- You struggle with filler words in professional communication
- You're on iOS and don't want another subscription
Skip it if:
- You're on Android (not available yet)
- You need system-wide dictation integration (keyboard feature coming soon)
- You already pay for Wispr Flow and love the floating button
- You dictate primarily on desktop, not mobile
For a free tool released quietly on a Monday, Google AI Edge Eloquent is shockingly good. It solves a real problem (verbal filler words make you sound less confident) with zero friction. Download it, dictate, paste. Done.
If you've ever rewritten an email three times because you couldn't find the right words, try speaking it instead. You might be surprised how much faster (and better) your thoughts sound when AI cleans them up.
Bottom line: This is the best free AI dictation app available right now. Download it, try one dictation, and you'll keep using it.
