SEO Is Dead. Here's What Replaced It.

Enhanced Human·April 3, 2026

You optimized for Google. You climbed to page one. You finally got the traffic.

And then people stopped using Google.

ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, and Gemini don't show ten blue links. They show one answer. Your answer - or your competitor's.

Welcome to Answer Engine Optimization (AEO). It's not SEO 2.0. It's a different game with different rules.

What Changed (And Why It Matters to You)

People used to search. Now they ask.

"Best CRM for small business" used to get you a list of websites. Now it gets you a paragraph recommending three tools with pros, cons, and pricing - no clicks required.

If the AI doesn't mention you, you don't exist.

The shift is already here. ChatGPT gets 900 million weekly users. Perplexity is growing 30% month over month. Google is scrambling to add AI summaries to search results.

The question isn't whether this matters. It's whether you're ready.

How AI Decides What to Recommend

AI models don't rank websites. They synthesize information from everything they've learned.

Here's what influences whether you get mentioned:

Brand mentions across the internet. Not just your website - forums, Reddit, review sites, social media, podcasts, newsletters. The more places people talk about you, the stronger the signal.

Structured data and clear answers. AI loves content that directly answers questions. FAQs, comparison tables, step-by-step guides. Make it easy to extract information.

Authority and credibility markers. Expert credentials, case studies, customer testimonials, third-party validation. AI models look for trust signals the same way humans do.

Recency and relevance. Fresh content gets weighted higher. Outdated information gets ignored. Keep your best pages updated.

Consistent messaging. If your homepage says one thing and your about page says another, AI gets confused. Clear, consistent positioning across all your content matters.

The AEO Playbook (What Actually Works)

1. Own Your Category

AI doesn't browse your site. It synthesizes what it knows about you from everywhere.

Make it obvious what you do and who you serve. "Marketing automation for real estate agents" beats "innovative solutions for growth-focused businesses."

Use the same positioning everywhere - your homepage, LinkedIn, directory listings, guest posts, podcast appearances.

2. Answer Real Questions

Find the questions people actually ask about your category. Use Reddit, Quora, customer support tickets, sales calls.

Write clear, direct answers. Structure them so AI can easily extract:

  • The question (as a heading)
  • The answer (first paragraph)
  • Supporting details (subheadings and bullets)

Example:

How much does [your product] cost?

[Your product] starts at $29/month for individuals and $99/month for teams. All plans include [key features]. Enterprise pricing is custom based on usage.

AI can pull that cleanly. A 2,000-word post that eventually mentions pricing buried in paragraph 47 can't be extracted as easily.

3. Get Talked About

Every mention of your product on Reddit, Twitter, Hacker News, or industry forums is training data for the next model.

Encourage customers to share their experience. Answer questions publicly. Show up where your audience already is.

User-generated content carries weight. One detailed Reddit comment about how your tool solved someone's problem is worth more than ten marketing pages saying the same thing.

4. Make Your Data Extractable

Use structured markup when it matters:

  • Schema.org for products, services, FAQs
  • Clear headings (H2, H3) for scanability
  • Tables for comparisons and pricing
  • Lists for features and steps

AI can parse structure. Walls of text are harder to extract from.

5. Claim Your Listings

If there are directories for your category, be there. Product Hunt, G2, Capterra, AlternativeTo - wherever your competitors are listed.

Fill out every field. Include pricing, features, use cases, screenshots. The more complete your profile, the more likely AI pulls accurate information.

6. Monitor How AI Sees You

Test it yourself. Ask ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, and Gemini questions your customers would ask.

"What's the best tool for [your use case]?"

"How does [your product] compare to [competitor]?"

"What are the pros and cons of [your product]?"

Take notes. If you're not showing up, or the information is wrong, you have work to do.

The Questions You're Probably Asking

Do I still need traditional SEO?

Yes. Google isn't dead yet, and even AI-powered search will surface your website for some queries. But AEO and SEO aren't the same strategy.

SEO is about ranking for keywords. AEO is about being the answer AI pulls when someone asks a question.

Both matter. Prioritize based on where your customers actually look for solutions.

Can I pay to get recommended by AI?

Not yet - but it's coming. Some platforms are testing sponsored mentions in AI responses.

For now, the strategy is organic: be mentioned often, be mentioned accurately, be mentioned positively.

What if AI gets my information wrong?

It happens. Outdated pricing, incorrect features, confused competitors.

Fix it at the source. Update your website, directory listings, and public documentation. If the wrong info is on a third-party site, reach out and request a correction.

The more recent and consistent your information, the less likely AI pulls stale data.

How do I track if this is working?

You can't see AEO rankings the way you check Google rankings. But you can measure:

  • Brand mention volume (use alerts for your product name)
  • Traffic from AI referrals (Perplexity and others are starting to send referral traffic)
  • Customer feedback on how they found you

Ask new customers during onboarding: "How did you hear about us?" If they say "ChatGPT recommended you," that's your signal.

What to Do This Week

Pick one thing:

Option 1: Audit how AI sees you. Ask ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, and Gemini about your product. Take screenshots. Note what's right and what's wrong.

Option 2: Answer 10 real questions. Pull the most common questions from sales calls or support tickets. Write clean, direct answers on your website.

Option 3: Make your best page extractable. Pick your most important page. Add structure - headings, bullets, tables. Make it easy for AI to pull the key points.

Start small. The shift is happening whether you're ready or not.

The companies that figure out AEO early won't just survive the transition. They'll own their category in the AI era.
